The first and foremost thing to be understood about Kayin is that she will never let anyone use her. She doesn’t ask for favors and she won’t do any for anyone. As far as she’s concerned, if she’s not getting something out of a deal, it’s not worth her time; and favors are not something she can physically use herself so it’d better be either cold hard cash or something of equivalent value offered for any of her services. She also hates relying on someone; another fine reason she hates making deals with favors. That being said, she’s rather bad at handling money. She’d sooner blow it all off on spirits, making her rather inefficient when it comes to running anything; say, a business. Money is something that seems to grow on trees in her opinion and there’s always more of it, so why bother with bills and other things? The only reality that makes her cling to having a little bit of money is that she needs Celebrer. She’s proud of herself for keeping her head above the water so far when she ran from her mercenary division, and she’s always made sure she has plenty of Celebrer to keep herself going. She never wants to go back into a weakened state like how that group kept her begging for the drug just to survive. However, money seems to not be the only thing she can’t handle in life. She’s horrid at sharing her feelings with others to an extent that she rarely ever even has anything past a bored facial expression. The only time she shows any true emotion is when she’s met someone who matches her skill in battle. Her love of fighting and – somewhat specifically – killing comes from her background. Having been praised for shedding blood since she was young will.. do things to a child; to a mind. The thrill of a good fight calls to her almost always. This really makes it impossible for her to hold any other job than that of a mercenary; and heaven knows she tried; even tried to hide that she was Tagged. Even so, she’s not a religious person. Shedding another’s blood does not tend to have any serious infliction on her conscious when she seems to have one. As her nickname suggests, Kayin is fearless and more than believes in her abilities. Probably more than she needs to. She’ll take on anyone she needs to, or even wants to, whether or not it’s a fight she should be getting into. Kayin is not afraid to tell anyone off, regardless of rank or their abilities. And if she’s punished for it then fine – she belongs to no faction, and no one will control her freedom of speech. There are few that Kayin actually cares for; those who choose to try to get close enough to her are those she feels she should protect with her life. Kayin would not stand down in their defense against an army for anyone she calls a friend. These are the only people she’ll lean on even a little, and even then it would be few and far between if she can help it. |
biography
Kayin was born to a Twilight mother and human father in North Gate. They both belonged to a mercenary group called Division, although it was more of a slave labour camp than a mercenary group. It was where parents sent and sold their bad children; they would be groomed into respectable people, sure; but their lives would be sold to the group until the day they died.
Kayin was no exception, although she was born into it. She knew nothing about freedom, and her whole life she only knew the control that the Division had over her; over her supply of Celebrer and her life. She conformed to their rules and underwent irregular training, stolen from her parents and practically taught to use a blade from before she could walk. Many of her skills went into her physical strength and speed, making her perfect for quick, strong kills and escaping before there was chance of retaliation. She had little reason to deny their requests; and if she did then her supply of Celebrer would be cut off long enough that she would have to beg to get some. If she threw a temper tantrum or anything of the like, they’d cut it off completely until she was nearly dead, and only then would they revive her from the sickness. So she learned to keep quiet and do as she was told before she was even considered a pre-teen.
She began her missions when she was 10. When released to live among the rest of the Division, she was treated as badly as the other few Twilights in the group; worse than dirt. If the humans could’ve had it their way, the Twilights would’ve had their throats slit. Early on, Kayin was put into a group named Falcon; her code name was Red Lion. The group specialized in guerilla tactics, and her skills could only add to it. She quickly became the favorite one to send into dangerous areas or on tasks that were considered suicidal, all because she had to. Although she never really became stronger in her rank as a Twilight in the group, she was one of their strongest resources; something she would never find out. When she was 14, she had an unspeakable body count for her age. Many of those in the Division wouldn’t begin missions until they were at least 18. She wasn’t given that honor.
At 16, she began realizing that she had never really known her parents. She, like many, asked the leader about it. He only said that she would get an answer if she could complete one simple mission; go into Ergastulum and kill a couple who’d been able to escape from the Division years earlier. Kayin did as she was told.
Rarely did Kayin ever stick around after completing a mission; but she was instructed this time that one of the targets was a Twilight and she was to bring back any Celebrer she could find. She slipped into their room at night and slit their throats so there wouldn’t be any hassle with fighting them. As she rummaged through their drawers, she found pictures, and tags. The pictures were of a couple with their baby, but no other pictures of the child could be found in the entire apartment.
The tag had her own last name on it.
The event opened her eyes to the Division’s mercilessness. It was the first time in her life that she actually felt sick, emotionally. In a blind rage she killed the humans who had accompanied her on the mission and ran, keeping her mother’s tag and the picture of her family. She didn’t return to the Division. Instead, she tried to make a life in the city as her parents had and stay hidden from the Division.
Kayin was only 16, but being rather big for her age she faked her ID and worked as a prostitute for Bastard for a time. Her boss found out quickly about her being tagged, but helped her hide the fact so that she could get customers. Needless to say, her personality made it hard for her to get customers except for those who were more submissive. Even then she never got a repeat customer, and she even scared some people from coming back for months. Kayin didn’t get paid when she didn’t supply the brothel with money, but she was fed and given shelter at least. After a year, she was fired. As much as she hated to leave, she internally enjoyed the fact that that was really the worst thing that had happened to her there. As a human, everything seemed.. better, somehow.
So she stayed that way. Even though she was only 17, she faked her age again and found work at a bar. It was here that she discovered two things; 1) That alcohol of almost any kind was good, and 2) She had no idea how to handle money. She got half off at the bar when she wasn’t working, and could almost always be found there on her off days. Being the only female worker she brought in plenty of customers, and the only reason she was hired was because of her unbreakable spirit the owner had picked up on in her interview. Still, she wasn’t excessively friendly with the customers, but she swore some of them liked being ignored. She enjoyed the work, and after a few years even began opening up to some of the regular customers and her co-workers.
When she was 22 though, the Division had finally found where she was hiding. She came to work one day to find that the owner and anyone already in the bar had been murdered. She only deduced that it was the Division because she knew too well their tactics; she had used and even created many of them for the group. This was the second time in her life she showed true emotion, mainly because she knew she could not retaliate against the entire group. She told police nothing and she did nothing. After that, she only made the silent agreement to herself that she would not let anyone into her life or let them be harmed. They hadn’t found her, but she still has anger at them for killing those people that had become special to her and the two people in her life that should have been.
Since then, she’s wandered the streets, never staying in one place for too long. She took up mercenary work again; something that came as the most natural thing in the world to her, and she asked herself why she had ever even given it up for anything else. She realized that she wouldn’t ever live a normal life like a human – she couldn’t. Some part of her still wants to have a chance at a normal life.
